For more than 6 years, Neogeo has had the privilege of supporting the Brittany Regional Health Agency in the design, implementation, and maintenance of an innovative digital tool: Responsible Shellfish Gathering, a mapping portal dedicated to raising awareness among shellfish gatherers about health recommendations related to the quality of coastal areas.
In March 2025, ARS Bretagne renewed its trust in Neogeo to provide ongoing maintenance for the platform, proof of a solid, lasting collaboration in service of the public interest.
🎯 A tool for prevention and public information
Recreational shellfish gathering holds a special place in Brittany. Practiced by knowledgeable regulars throughout the year as well as by numerous tourists during holidays, it draws several thousand people to the most popular gathering grounds, particularly during spring tides. In Brittany, nearly one hundred recreational shellfish gathering sites are subject to regular health monitoring.
To prevent health risks associated with shellfish consumption, and in response to strong demand from users for easy access to information on the health quality of gathering sites, ARS Bretagne regularly communicates and relays relevant health information.
Originally developed in 2018, the Responsible Shellfish Gathering portal addresses a dual challenge:
- Health: informing the public about areas temporarily or permanently closed to shellfish gathering, to prevent any risk of contamination.
- Educational: promoting good gathering practices that respect ecosystems and regulations.
The interactive map allows every user — amateur gatherer, walker, or tourist — to check the health status of shellfish gathering areas in just a few clicks.
🗺️ GIS and web expertise serving local communities
Here, Neogeo draws on its full expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and web development to create an interface that displays real-time health quality data for monitored shellfish gathering sites and areas that may be closed to gathering, with data visualization, query, and download features. Access to weather forecasts and tide times is also provided.
This project perfectly illustrates how targeted digital tools can improve the dissemination of crucial information for public health, while showcasing the work of local authorities and regional agencies.
With this interactive map you can find your favorite gathering spot in just a few clicks, check gathering health guidelines, and view temporary alerts for safe shellfish gathering.
